The super-yacht Le Boreal, currently being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy for delivery in spring 2010, is one of two 264-passenger sister-ships ordered by Compagnie du Ponant. L'Austral will follow in 2011.
Both vessels will be 142m long with a beam of 18m and will have the same elegant, streamlined silhouette. These ships have been designed in the spirit of a private yacht, with large arched windows fore and aft. They will be capable of a 16 knot average cruising speed while providing passengers with a high degree of stability and comfort.
Respect for the environment is at the heart of the design. For example being equipped with a computerised dynamic positioning system, the ships will never have to drop anchor in fragile marine reserves. Le Boreal and L'Austral will be fully eligible for a "Green Ship" label.
For the interiors, Compagnie du Ponant has called on Ocre Bleu, the architecture and interior design agency of Jean-Philippe Nuel. Reflecting the same image of the three existing ships in the fleet, L'Austral and Le Boreal will offer a unique ambiance created by a subtle blend of relaxation, sophistication and intimacy.
An elegant yet warmly welcoming contemporary style will favour natural materials and traditional nautical features in the communal spaces, as well as throughout the 132 outside cabins and suites, 95 per cent of which have balconies. A reception area, spacious lounges, two restaurants, a fully equiped theatre, an outside swimming pool, a beauty and finess centre and an observation lounge are planned.
