NAPLES: Sorrento & Pompeii
Towards Sorrento we follow a scenic route. In Sorrento we stop in Piazza Tasso, the heart of the town and with the guide we will start a walking tour along Via De Maio to the Church of San Antonino, dating back to the XIV Century, to reach the vista point over the gulfs of Marina Grande and Marina Piccola.
Then we will stroll down the narrow alleys and fascinating little square decorated with colourful windows of the picturesque shops and bars. Then we move on to Pompeii. The tour of the excavations starts from the Porta Marina, the gate to the Forum that was the economic and political centre of the town.

Afterwards we walk through the ruins of some of ancient shops and homes. The most famous one is Casa dei Vetil, an example of a rich merchant dwelling decorated with well preserved frescoes. We then proceed to visit Casa dei Fauno and the Roman Baths.
The well preserved ruins of the lifeless city provide an idea of a Roman city on a grand scale during the time of the great Empire. Lunch boxes will be provided.
MESSINA - SICILY: Mount Etna & Taormina
After leaving the pier we drive through the center of the town until the highway to Mount Etna. Along the scenic road that winds around the slopes of the mountain, passing the town of Giarre and the village of Zafferana, we arrive at Mount Etna-Cratere Silvestri, at about 1950 metres above sea level.
Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. The slopes soar up to over 3296 metres and the flanks of the mountain are covered with scores of cones and craters. From its top you can admire the Gulf of Catania, but of course the major attraction is the crater and the remnants of the awe-inspiring streams of lava.
The tour continues to Taormina, where we take a guided tour and visit the Greek Theatre (inside) and the gothic Corvala Palace (outside). After having some free time for a stroll in the characteristic alleys of Taormina we drive back to Messina.
Lunch boxes will be provided. |
