P&OCruises considers a new cruise ship to operate out of UK

Concept document drafted; technical/financial evaluation begins

Contract with Meyer Werft signed

The order to build is announced

Model testing to evaluate capability and manoeuvrability

October...The first steel is cut

November...Construction begins

1993

March... Keel laying ceremony: name Oriana announced

July... Oriana moved for first time - 4,000 tons of steel moved 50 metres within the dry dock

September... Stabilisers fitted

October... All four main engines installed

December... Total amount of steel erected reaches 7,762 tons - 50% of the total

1994

March... Steel erected reaches 11,554 tons, 79% of total

May... Both propeller shafts fitted

June... Both rudders are fitted

July... Oriana is floated out of the covered building hall; of the major exterior items, only the funnel and foremast remain to be fitted

October... Painting of main hull is complete; boilers are operational

1995

January... Funnel is lifted into position; Meyer Werft celebrates its 200th anniversary with a function on board Oriana

February... Oriana is floated down the River Ems to Emden

March... Sea trials

April...Oriana arrives at her home port of Southampton, named by the Queen on April 6 and maiden voyage sailing on April 9
