It enters service in early 2008, two years after the debut in April, 2006, of Freedom of the Seas. The second will arrive in spring 2007.
The ships will be 15 per cent larger than those in the Voyager-class, and will have new ground-breaking features, not yet revealed. They will measure 126 feet by 1,112 feet, stand 18 stories high and carry up to 3,600 guests and 1,400 crew.
The agreement with Aker Yards of Finland, where two other Freedom ships are under construction, is subject to certain conditions, including board approval.
Says RCCL chairman Richard Fain: "We have said all along that the continued success of our brands will depend on the steady, sustained growth of our fleet. We are pleased to reaffirm that pledge, and are excited about the enormous possibilities inherent in these new ships."
Royal Caribbean's newest entrant to its fleet, Jewel of the Seas, its 19th ship, debuted last spring. The company ordered Freedom of the Seas in September, 2003.
