FREEDOM OF THE SEASRoyal Caribbean Cruise Line

Fitness fans hit
the High Seas

Freedom of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, introduced the largest and most innovative fitness centre at sea when at arrived in May 2006.

As attitudes to diet and exercise develop, more and more people aim to maintain their fitness regimes while on holiday, searching for action-filled activity and adventure. The cutting edge facilities on board Freedom's ShipShape Fitness Centre ensure this is one ship it is certainly worth working up a sweat over.

The fitness centre is 9,700 sq feet, excluding changing areas. No other cruise ship had a fitness centre this large or offered such an innovative exercise programme.

Freedom of the Seas introduces guests to the latest fitness trends and exercise equipment, all overseen by experts in the field of health and well being.

Whether guests opt for Night Klub Cycling with its live DJ and full light show, make use of the full sized boxing ring for high impact workouts, or the rigorous regime that comes with Boot Camp Xtreme Training, Freedom of the Seas offers something for every fitness level.

Says RCI president Adam Goldstein:

"We have a legacy of offering the unexpected to our guests and we knew with Freedom of the Seas we had to come out with something fabulous at every turn - our fitness centre, the largest one found on any cruise ship, is no exception. We are confident we are providing our guests with the best and most innovative options in the marketplace."

Some of the exciting 'firsts' onboard the ShipShape Fitness Centre include:

  • Trekking - using treadmills as part of an invigorating group exercise class
  • A full-size Everlast boxing ring - for high impact exercise, such as Boxercise
  • Boot Camp Xtreme Training - a Marine style Boot Camp Xtreme Training class, complete with shuttle runs, jump ropes, jacks, boxing moves and more
  • Night Klub Cycling - spinning with a difference, with a live DJ and full light show, to ensure exercise is as fun a possible
  • BOSU X-Training and conditioning classes - the latest core stability exercise, great for regular gym buffs
  • Group Pilates reformer studio with 8 reformers
  • The Power Plate - a vibrating exercise platform renowned for increasing metabolism, reducing cellulite, improving flexibility and circulation, along with strengthening bone density
  • Cable Motion series of equipment from LifeFitness
  • Specialty fitness speakers and presenters offering advice on nutrition, weight management, group exercise, Pilates and Yoga
  • The Polar BodyAge fitness assessment system, which tests cardiovascular health, body fat, strength, flexibility and more to compare the body's "fitness age" with its chronological age

With outstanding amenities that many traditional gyms would find a challenge to compete with, Freedom of the Seas offers even more for thrill-seeking cruisers, in the form of the FlowRider. The 32ft-wide by 40ft-long FlowRider generates a thin sheet of water that flows over the ride surface, creating a wave-like shape, so riders surf or body board against the waterflow of 30,000 gallons per minute, carving turns and trying tricks, flowboarding, or body boarding.

Other adrenalin charged features include the largest rock-climbing wall at sea, an indoor ice-skating ring and a miniature golf course, ensuring Freedom of the Seas truly has something for every kind of traveller.
