The legacy of war

OVER the centuries, Calais has been a battleground for the Romans, Spanish, British and Germans.
Now visitors can relive the most recent and most bloody conflict, the Second World War, in the Calais War Museum.
Situated in the giant Mako bunker, former headquarters of the German Navy, in Saint-Pierre Park next to the Hotel de Ville, the museum describes what happened in and around the town, from the battles of May 1940 to the liberation in September 1944.
Within the heavily-camouflaged bunker, one of the biggest built by the Germans in France, there are fascinating displays devoted to the Battle of Britain, the Royal Green Jackets Regiment, prisoners of war, the Resistance, the German Navy and daily life during the Nazi occupation.
It's also wheelchair friendly, as people in wheelchairs will find good access to all the exhibits.
