THEME CRUISING
Who goes where
Airtours' is spicing up the entertainment on its transatlantic cruises with a range of special interest activities from dancing to fruit carving. Different activities are offered on six cruises - flagship MS Sunbird offers themes including pastimes antiques, food and wine, comedy, arts, crafts and home and dancing.
Clipper Voyages offers adventure cruises to unusual destinations, such as Antarctica, the Arctic, the Darien Jungle and the Panama Canal. On board naturalists offer informal lectures on local wildlife and flora whilst motorised landing craft take small numbers of passengers ashore for a closer look. Also available is a cruise to the battlefields of the American Civil War.
Crystal Cruises'
two spacious ships operate a wide variety of leisure programmes on board, combined with a good proportion of sea days. The most popular themes which have been developed include: Crystal Wine and Food Festival; Health and Fitness cruises; Big Band and Jazz cruises: the Computer University @ Sea "Comprehensive"; and a new, fully-fledged, stand-alone golf cruise programme. Each of these programmes is designed to enhance the day to day on-board experience.
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offers themed and special interest cruises on its ship Black Watch throughout the year. Aimed at tying in the theme subject with the cruise destination, these cruises provide the opportunity for passengers to listen to experts talking on, or demonstrating, their given subjects. Always extremely popular are Eastern Mediterranean cruises with an Archaeology and Ancient History theme, and Caribbean or Canary Island cruises with a Gardening or Golf theme.
Disney Cruises offer a wide range of activities and themes including gardening, personalities celebrities, comedy, computers, cuisine, film, health & fitness, millennium, scuba diving, sport, marine biology and wine.
Holland America Line:
Anyone wishing for something "out of the ordinary can find it on a Holland America Line theme cruise. Choose from a high value "Big Band" transatlantic fly/cruise; or "Greats of Broadway", jazz, 50's style entertainment and "Health & Well-being" in Caribbean cruises. KD River Cruises has a number of specialist themed cruises including an opera lovers cruise, gardening cruise and wine lovers cruise. Specialising in small ships, KD vessels carry a maximum of 184 passengers ensuring attentive service and freshly cooked meals at all times.
Norwegian Coastal Line offers a number of different cruises through the year including "Cruise with the Classics", "Learn about wine on a Mediterranean Cruise", "Book your spot for the Eclipse" and various different fitness cruises.
Orient Lines:
Talks by specialist lecturers enhance the destination experience for passengers on board the Marco Polo of destination cruise specialists, Orient Lines. Themes include astronomy with Patrick Moore, botany with David Bellamy, wine with Jilly Goolden, health & beauty with Bharti Vyas and, new for 1999, comedy with Ray Cooney and antiques with The Antiques Road Show.
P&O Cruises:
Of almost 60 cruises operated by P&O Cruises, more than half have themes, the largest selection for the British cruise market. In all, there are 18 different themes, dominated by classical music, antiques and bridge as the big "passenger pleasers" and supported by a varied programme which includes football, motoring, maritime and an Archers cruise, especially for fans of the BBC Radio 4 programme.
Radisson Seven Seas Cruises: The port-intensive itineraries operated by the small ship fleet of Radisson Seven Seas Cruises focus primarily on destination - art treasures, ancient history and local culture. In addition, as the Official Cruise Line of the PGA of America, RSSC offers a comprehensive golf programme with specific, designated golf cruises and the Golf Academy. Highly successful European Music Festival cruises are enhanced by exclusive performances at certain ports of call. The Paul Gauguin positioned in Tahiti offers a Dive programme year-round for both novice and expert alike.
Silversea Cruises operate a number of speciality cruises throughout the year, from the National Geographic Cruises for the more culturally
discerning traveller to Silver Links Golf Cruises for those seeking a
challenge on world's finest courses. The Relais & Chateaux and Le Cordon Bleu Culinary cruises feature the gastronomic artistry of some of the world's leading chefs.
Swan Hellenic: Each cruise is accompanied by a selection of expert guest speakers who give informal talks on a wide rage of topics from astronomy, wine and botany, to marine biology, modern politics and ancient history.
