Normandie Express returns

March 12, 2010 - Brittany Ferries' high-speed catamara, Normandie Express roared back into action today when she started her 2010 season of speedy crossings from Portsmouth to Cherbourg and Caen in Normandy. This year Brittany Ferries has introduced the craft earlier in the season and is offering more frequent departures than in previous years.

This not ony caters for strong demand from passengers wanting to cross the Channel quickly from Portsmouth, but also compensates for the reduction in sailings between Poole and Cherbourg following the recent withdrawal of the conventional ferry, Barfleur.

P&O marks pet travel anniversary

March 1, 2010 - Britain’s pet owners celebrated a decade of liberation over the weekend, as the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) notched up its tenth anniversary. The scheme transformed the holiday options for the owners of cats, dogs, and ferrets.

Previously, six-month quarantine requirements made it largely impractical and prohibitively expensive to travel from the UK to the Continent with pets, or more precisely to bring them home. Under PETS it became a formality, as long as procedures laid down by DEFRA are followed.

The pioneer of it all was a pug dog called Frodo, the first pet to travel under the scheme when he sailed from Calais to Dover with P&O Ferries on February 289, 2000. Since then hundreds of thousands of pets have followed his (wait for it) lead.

The micro-chipping and documentation required under the scheme can also serve a wider purpose. For Sandi, an adventurous ginger tom from Lee-on-the-Solent, it was the key to him being identified and returned to his owners after he turned up in Spain, having managed to sneak a ride on the Pride of Bilbao ferry.

Michelle Ulyatt of P&O Ferries said: "Dogs and cats travel as a matter of routine, ferrets less so, but it’ll be interesting when a customer turns up with all three!"

Our picture shows Captain Paul Barrett of P&O Ferries marking the 10th anniversary of the Pet Travel Scheme with Ted the collie, Harvey the cat, and Reggie the ferret.
